Man goes to prison for wife’s guns

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) – A Bremerton man who turned down a plea deal was convicted in Kitsap County Superior Court of unlawful possession of firearms and now faces a 3-year prison term.

The Kitsap Sun reports 37-year-old Luke T. Groves could have avoided prison if he had accepted a deal with prosecutors.

Groves says he he wasn’t notified that a burglary conviction 20 years ago carried a lifetime gun ban.

After his conviction yesterday in Port Orchard he was led away in handcuffs. He’ll be sentenced Jan. 29.

Groves called police in November 2008 after he found a broken window at his home. He told officers his wife owned a rifle and handgun.

Nothing had been stolen, but Groves was arrested for being a felon in possession of firearms. – [source]

Judge Dismisses Blackwater Case

A federal judge cited repeated government missteps in dismissing all charges against five Blackwater Worldwide security guards accused of killing unarmed Iraqi civilians in a case that inflamed anti-American sentiment abroad.

U.S. District Judge Ricardo Urbina dismissed the case against the guards accused of the shooting in a crowded Baghdad intersection in 2007.

The shooting in busy Nisoor Square left 17 Iraqis dead. The Iraqi government wanted the guards to face trial in Iraq and officials there said they would closely watch how the U.S. judicial system handled the case.

Urbina said the prosecutors ignored the advice of senior Justice Department officials and built their case on sworn statements that had been given under a promise of immunity. Urbina said that violated the guards’ constitutional rights. He dismissed the government’s explanations as “contradictory, unbelievable and lacking in credibility.” – [source]

New Year’s gun rights resolution: Demand ATF investigations

The enemies of our right to keep and bear arms are taking a backdoor approach to bypass our elected representatives–one that will result in increasing the reach of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Giving more power to this agency is fundamentally wrong for a many reasons well known to gun rights advocates.

“According to ATF employees who are risking their careers to post information on CleanUpATF.org:

“Managers, Counsel, Internal Affairs and staff of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (BATFE or “ATF”) have repeatedly given false testimony, concealed substantial waste, fraud and abuse, abused their lawful authority, and waged systematic campaigns of reprisal against their own employees that dare to speak out. This website is intended by members of the ATF community to promote restoration of integrity, accountability and responsibility to ATF’s leadership, and regain the trust of the American taxpayer. “-[source]

A Warrior Passes in Texas

Retired Army Col. Robert L. Howard, a Medal of Honor recipient for combat action in Vietnam in 1968 and one of the America’s most highly decorated Soldiers, died Dec. 23 in Waco, Texas.

The 70-year-old Howard died in a hospice in Waco, according to a report in the San Antonio Express News today. The paper, quoting a longtime friend of Howard’s, retired Sgt. Maj. Benito Guerrero, said Howard had been suffering from pancreatic cancer.

Howard began his Army career as an enlisted man. During one 13-month tour in Vietnam he was nominated for the Medal of Honor three times, but in the first instance the award was downgraded to the Distinguished Service Cross. Several biographies say that downgrade, as well as another — to the Silver Star — was to avoid the problem of noting in the Medal of Honor citation specifics of the combat operations, which were covert.

But one nomination did result in the awarding of the MoH. It was presented to him by President Richard Nixon during a White House ceremony in 1971. – [source]

Sixty Million Armed Patriots … and Counting

“No freeman shall ever be debarred the use of arms.” –Thomas Jefferson

Currently, large sectors of the U.S. economy have collapsed, consumer confidence is at a historic low, Democrats control the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government, and they’re poised to print “bailout and infrastructure” money on the theory of “trickle up poverty” — risking a prolonged recession followed by hyperinflation and/or a protracted depression.

Or does the latter “risk” constitute their real plan?

If there is an economic recovery any time soon, it will be the result of private sector initiatives and a consumer confidence recovery, not the redistribution of a few trillion dollars among friends as directed by the “community organizer” in the White House.

But can consumer confidence overcome Barack Hussein Obama’s agenda? Clearly, he and his congressional cadre are using the current crisis as cover to further undermine our constitutional rule of law — in fact, they may just spend liberty out of existence — leaving the masses dependent on the state for subsistence, thus rife for the radical “change” that Obama and his ilk ultimately seek.

Yes, Obama and his Demo colleagues in the Senate and House have taken a sacred oath to “support and defend” our Constitution, but they have no history of honoring their oaths.  – [source]

Playing the ‘Race PCI-Card’

Hewlett-Packard is investigating a claim that Webcams built into its PCs are incapable of tracking the facial movements of black individuals and only function properly when Caucasians or people of other lighter-skinned races are in the frame.

The probe was prompted by a YouTube video in which a black man named Desi demonstrates the problem. The camera, which is designed to follow individuals’ head movements, fails to track Desi as he moves in and out of the picture.

But when Desi’s white co-worker, Wanda, enters the scene the camera follows her. “As soon as my blackness enters the frame, it stopped,” says Desi. “Black Desi gets in there, no face recognition anymore buddy,” says Desi.

“I’m going on the record and I’m saying it, Hewlett-Packard computers are racist,” adds Desi, who says he’s using an HP Media Smart PC.

HP officials posted a blog Sunday indicating that the company is taking the claim seriously and investigating if technical issues are behind the problem. – [OMG]

More Proof That Guns Do Not Cause Crime

BELLEVUE, WA – A ten percent drop in murders during the first six months of this year at a time when gun sales were up dramatically is more proof that there is no correlation between gun ownership and violent crime, the Second Amendment Foundation said today.

The FBI released data Monday that shows murders dropped by 10 percent from the same period in 2008. Meanwhile, according to data released by the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) shows that during the first six months of this year, gun sales were up. January 2009 background checks rose 28.8 percent over the same month in 2008, February’s NICS checks were up 23.3 percent and in March they were up 29.9 percent over March 2008. The trend continued in April, with NICS checks up 30.3 percent, while May showed a slowdown, up only 15.5 percent, and in June they were up 18.1 percent.

Amtrak to Store Gun Toting Passengers In A Box?

It may sound absurd, but President Obama signed a bill into law Wednesday that requires passengers who carry firearms aboard Amtrak be locked in boxes for their journey.

It’s a mistake in the law’s wording. But for now, the clerical error is the law of the land.

Earlier this week, Congress sent the president a massive spending bill that funded dozens of federal departments. Tucked into the transportation section of the legislation are safety requirements for Amtrak customers who carry firearms on board the government-backed train system. The bill Congress passed mandates that passengers with firearms declare they have weapons with them in advance and stow them in locked boxes while on the train.

Aides to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., became aware of the problem Wednesday night as the House voted on its final slate of bills for the year. Pelosi’s staff tried to negotiate with Republican aides to see if they would agree to change the text of the bill without revoting the entire piece of legislation. But it was all for naught as Obama had already signed the measure into law.

It’s clear the typo alters the legislation’s mandate. But no one quite knows the origin of the mistake. – [source]
