A FIELD GUIDE TO GUN SHOWS

Gun shows are run by and for dreamers. Every dealer who sets up a table seems to think that the people who attend are half-wits who will happily pay 25% more than manufacturer’s suggested retail price for their goods; and all the attendees hold it as an article of faith that the exhibitors are desperate men who have come in the hopes of finally disposing of their stock at 30% less than wholesale cost. ~ read all about Gun Shows Continue Reading ‘A FIELD GUIDE TO GUN SHOWS’

Ballmer Announces Microsoft Support For Linux

Border Patrol has message for Vicente Fox

and it isn’t what you might think…

Presidente Fox, HELP!: Will you please order your subordinate, George Bush, to get our borders under control? Bush won’t listen to the American people, he defies the will of 70 to 80% of us, but you have some obvious power over him. Can you help us out here pal?

Maybe order him to hire a few more Border Patrol agents and some equipment so we can patrol the borders? Get him to buy us a few patrol vehicles so we don’t have to drive worn out junk with over 150,000 or 200,000 miles on the odometer?

Maybe even get him to quit enticing millions more of your countrymen to come over here illegally by throwing endless amnesty proposals out there and telling us we shouldn’t be chasing them in the first place because they’re just good-hearted people coming here to take jobs we won’t do?

Maybe get a two-way radio system that actually works? We have a somewhat selfish motive for asking Presidente Fox. You see, at the rate Mr. Bush is cutting our budget, cutting our new hires, cutting our employment rights, depriving us of equipment, demoralizing our workforce with dumb statements, and cutting our pay, we believe that soon these “good hearted illegal aliens” he so desperately wants here may in fact really be doing a job soon that no American will want to do. The job of a Border Patrol agent!

We believe he may really have a pent-up and sincere desire to have the “fox” guarding the henhouse. We need some help here buddy. Please!!! Can you help save our jobs?

Radio 4 revives Hitchhiker’s game

Radio 4 revives Hitchhiker’s game
A computer game written by Douglas Adams is being revived to coincide with a new BBC Radio 4 series of The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy.
The text adventure will appear on the station’s website and was described by the late Adams as “the first game to move beyond being ‘user friendly’”.

“It’s actually ‘user insulting’ and because it lies to you as well it’s also ‘user mendacious,’” he said.

The final three Hitchhikers adaptations will be broadcast from 21 September. Continue Reading ‘Radio 4 revives Hitchhiker’s game’

Micro$oft Video Downloads

Many would accuse Microsoft of having often spied a good industry space and attacking it a little late. (Although we all know that in the annals of history, Microsoft generally comes late then trumps the pioneers.) However, in the case of portability and video content, the giant seems to be a bit early to the game.

Microsoft reportedly plans a service through which, for a mere $19.95 per year (can I get an Amen?), users can download certain TV and video content to portable devices like laptops, its own Portable Media Center, and sophisticated cell phones. It’s dubbed MSN Video Downloads. (Microsoft’s typical lack of imagination in product name-calling is another take for another day.)

1984 Betamax ruling protects file-swapping?

On Tuesday morning, lawyers from Hollywood and the technology industry will meet at the U.S. Supreme Court to argue over the fate of peer-to-peer software. But they’ll be spending much of their time talking about the VCR.

At the core of the file-swapping dispute is an interpretation of the 20-year-old decision that made Sony’s Betamax legal to sell in the United States.

The Betamax ruling established that it was possible to record media at home, as long as it was for personal use. It made sure that companies producing recording devices couldn’t be sued, even if some people used them in illegal ways. If Betamax had gone the other way, the explosion in VCRs, rental movies, home DVDs and digital video recorders couldn’t have happened, or would likely have been slower and more expensive.
