Mercury’s sun crossing wows onlookers of all ages

FORT WORTH — Seeing is believing.

Nicole Crumpler, 7, of Coppell leaned over the eyepiece of a telescope at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. A Baader solar filter dimmed the bright sun, making it an eggshell-colored disc. In the 3 o’clock position was a black dot.

"I saw it!" Nicole exclaimed, jumping up and down. "I saw Mercury!"

The viewing was not exactly a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but it was rare. Nicole and her twin sister, Erin, who also took a peek at the solar system’s smallest planet, will be old enough to pick out prom dresses on May 9, 2016, the next time Mercury passes between the Earth and the sun.

A group of kids and parents watched Mercury from the museum’s north parking lot. Workers from the Noble Planetarium offered mini lessons in astronomy. Members of the Fort Worth Astronomical Society were generous with their telescopes.

"I’m getting to spread a little bit of what excites me," member Wil Dobson said, refocusing his telescope for the next curious onlooker. "It’s one thing for them to look at something in a book. It’s another thing for them to actually get to see it."

Remember the face on mars?

"The Face on Mars is also old hat. Although photographs from Mars-orbiting spacecraft have shown the feature as an eroded land form, there are still true believers that can’t be swayed.

Surprise! The Mars Express spacecraft’s portrait of the Face on Mars doesn’t look much like a face.

That’s why I enjoyed Monday’s caption for the Astronomy Picture of the Day when the site featured a just-released 3-D image of the Face taken by the European Space Agency’s Mars Express spacecraft. Some people make a little too much out of situations when we see familiar shapes in natural objects. We see faces in rocks or the Virgin Mary in water stains because our brains are wired that way, not because they actually are faces or manifestations of biblical figures. I enjoyed the succinctness of the APOD caption, but since my laundry doesn’t smell like root beer, I’m not clear on that reference." ~ Stuart Goldman — September 26, 2006

"The Universe is an awe-inspiring place even without ‘faces’ on Mars and E.T. transmissions from distant places. It’s huge; more mindboggling vast than even human imagination. Our time, THIS time, is a remarkable time to be alive. We ALL have access to imagery and knowledge previously unknown, and we should all be grateful to be here and now." ~ –Wil Dobson — Oct. 2, 2006 Continue Reading ‘Remember the face on mars?’

Happy Veterans Day!

Geeks With Guns would like to express gratitude to all of you out there who have spent blood, viagra sale sweat and tears in the service of our Great Country.  We believe service should be compulsory as a price to be paid for living in the United States, but as it is not, it just sweetens the sacrifice of those who either voluntarily executed the duties of a soldier, sailor, airman or marine, or those who where drafted into the service and acted with honor and courage in the face of difficult times.

As a Gulf War I vet, I would like to express the prayers of my Grand Father, Father, Wife and Brother (also vets) that you be blessed by God, fruitful in business, family and health, and to thank you for being a step above.

YOU are truly GREAT AMERICANS.

No more new users?

It has come to my attention that new users are not able to sign up for accounts on geekswithguns.com – This is likely been happening since I locked the site down with NukeSentinel™ after the unfortunate number of PHPNuke security holes being exploited.  I don’t yet have a solution to this problem, and don’t know if it would be quicker to move the site to a different content management system or to fix the issue. Contact me to get added.  I will have to do it manually. Continue Reading ‘No more new users?’

Texas puts ‘virtual border watch’ online

A test Web site went live Thursday at texasborderwatch.com with views from eight cameras and ways for viewers to e-mail reports of suspicious activity. Previously, the images had only been available to law enforcement and landowners where the cameras are located.

"There is only one way to test it, and that’s open it up for business," said Texas Homeland Director Steve McCraw.

Some civil rights groups have criticized the "virtual border watch," saying it will instill fear in border communities and could lead to fraudulent crime reports and racial profiling.

Will you vote like a terrorist?

Everybody has an opinion about next Tuesday’s midterm congressional election in the U.S. – including senior terrorist leaders interviewed by WND who say they hope Americans sweep the Democrats into power because of the party’s position on withdrawing from Iraq, a move, as they see it, that ensures victory for the worldwide Islamic resistance.
The terrorists told WorldNetDaily an electoral win for the Democrats would prove to them Americans are "tired." Continue Reading ‘Will you vote like a terrorist?’

The plan to keep republican power.

I am told that people who forget the past, are condemned to repeat it. (citation)

Is there some plan in our past which matches todays battle of Democrat vs. Republican? I did a little research on Wikipedia (URL) and found the following information on one of the most defining moments not only in Republican History, but American History.

"The Republicans denounced the northern anti war Democrats as disloyal Copperheads and won enough War Democrats to maintain their majority in 1862, and reelect Lincoln by a landslide in 1864."
(URL)

I think if the Conservative Party has any hopes of keeping liberal judges off the bench, we need to support the Republican Party, which has been our Party for at least 150 years.  That means, getting out there to vote.  That means calling out those Dems who will certainly bow to terrorism and the European Union (and the U.N., and Korea (again), and France, and and… you the the idea)).  Call those Copperheads by the name of "Liberal", "Socialist", "Freeloadin’ Hippy Bastage"; Call them what ye will, but don’t forget to call them out!

Yeah, we need to ‘punish’ the Republicans who rode our votes into power and did nothing on the core items we want and need. But we can’t do that by stabbing ourselves in the process.  We need Tax reform, Abortion reform, Stronger Police, Stronger Military, Safer Israel, Traditional Marriage, Personal Rights, FREEDOM From Big Government!  Do I have you cheering yet?

We need to start sending *OUR* Conservative representatives into the political ranks to retain control of our world and that of our children. If there aren’t any conservatives to vote for, then that’s our bad.  Don’t make it worse by allowing the worst people imaginable into power! Continue Reading ‘The plan to keep republican power.’

Guns not to blame for violence

With the latest school shooting, we are once again hearing calls for stricter gun control and/or total gun bans. Let’s take a step back and all imagine we are in what the anti-firearms community believes to be a perfect world with no guns.

Educators oppose letting teachers carry firearms

In the wake of deadly school shootings around the country, Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt has suggested it would be worth considering proposals from lawmakers to allow teachers to carry firearms in schools.

Democratic legislative candidate Matt Hill, who is seeking to unseat Republican incumbent Nathan Cooper in the 158th District Missouri House race, has suggested that allowing teachers to carry guns could be a way to prevent school violence.

Hill said he has a license to carry a concealed weapon.

"Anyone qualified, competent to carry should be allowed to do that anywhere, including a school," Hill said at a recent candidates forum.

But local educators strongly disagree.
