The Pentagon’s New Ray Gun

LONDON – Scientists are questioning the safety of a “Star Wars”-style ray gun due to be deployed in Iraq for riot control next year.

The Active Denial System weapon, buy more about classified as “less lethal” by the Pentagon, nurse fires a 95-gigahertz microwave beam at rioters to cause heating and intolerable pain in less than five seconds.

Scotty Beamed-Up after only 85 years on Earth

Actor James Doohan, best known as Scotty, the feisty, Scottish-accented chief engineer on television’s original “Star Trek” series, died on Wednesday at his home in Redmond, Washington, his manager said. He was 85.

Mr. Scott follows the good Dr. “Bones” McCoy in the great beyond. God speed Mr. Doohan.

The most weird feature of PP-90M1 is its charging system, here which is made as a button, located just above the muzzle. It had to be pressed with the finger (see arrow) to cock the gun. Not the safest way, if anyone will ask me.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. intelligence community is investing in new technology meant to provide instant recognition of insurgency fugitives in such crowded facilities as airports and subways.

Pixlogic has employed new software based on visual pattern recognition and search technologies to match archived still or video images with those gathered from security cameras or other sources, Middle East Newsline reported.

WASHINGTON, June 27 – The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the police did not have a constitutional duty to protect a person from harm, even a woman who had obtained a court-issued protective order against a violent husband making an arrest mandatory for a violation.

The decision, with an opinion by Justice Antonin Scalia and dissents from Justices John Paul Stevens and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, overturned a ruling by a federal appeals court in Colorado. The appeals court had permitted a lawsuit to proceed against a Colorado town, Castle Rock, for the failure of the police to respond to a woman’s pleas for help after her estranged husband violated a protective order by kidnapping their three young daughters, whom he eventually killed.

Every so often you see it on the news: streets full of Middle Eastern men indiscriminately firing guns straight up into the air. If I learned anything from physics class, it’s that what goes up must come down. I’m certain the returning projectiles don’t float harmlessly to earth and wonder how often they plunge into bystanders.
