Dallas, Texas, gun shop owner DeWayne Irwin said the election, combined with an unstable economy, triggered a firearms dash at his store.
"People are terrified of losing their right to protect themselves," Irwin told the Tribune. "The volume is 10 times what we ever expected. It started with assault rifles, but at this point people are buying ammunition, high-capacity magazines, Glocks – it’s all flying off the shelf. With the economy the way it is, people are worried about instability. They are scared of civil unrest."
Likewise, Manassas, Va., gun store owner Bernie Conatser told CNN firearm sales have almost tripled at his shop.
"I have been in business for 12 years, and I was here for Y2K, September 11, Katrina," Conatser said. "And all of those were big events, and we did notice a spike in business, but nothing on the order of what we are seeing right now."
Managers at a shooting center in Houston reported selling out of assault weapons the day after Obama was elected. It now has a month-long waiting list for weapons costing more than $1,000 each."

Pentagon mad-science division Darpa is helping build thought-controlled robotic limbs, see artificial pack mules, real-life laser guns and "kill-proof" soldiers. So it comes as no surprise, really, that the agency is now getting into the flying-car business, too.
Darpa hopes its "Personal Air Vehicle Technology"
project, announced yesterday, will ultimately lead to a working
prototype of a military-suitable flying car — a two- or four-passenger
vehicle that can "drive on roads" one minute and take off like a
helicopter the next. The hybrid machine would be perfect for "urban
scouting," casualty evacuation and commando-delivery missions, the
agency believes.

A Texas Tech student who won a field goal kicking contest made his debut Saturday, capsule making him the most recent walk-on to achieve success.
Williams came out of the stands to during halftime of the Sept. 20 Texas Tech-UMass game to participate in a kicking contest and knocked a 30-yard field goal through the uprights. The field goal, called “smooth and beautiful” by Texas Tech assistant athletic director Chris Cook, caught the attention the coaching staff, which was in desperate need of a kicker. – [source]

Flyer advises Democrats to vote Nov. 5 ‘This was the only way to ensure fairness to complete electoral process’
A flyer advising Republicans to cast their election ballots Nov. 4 – and Democrats on Nov. 5 – has been distributed throughout several Hampton Roads communities in Virginia. The notice is dated Oct. 24 and features a Virginia State Board of Elections logo and state seal, the Virginian-Pilot reported.
It warns voters that a large turnout could impact elections and states, "An emergency session of the General Assembly has adopted the follwing (sic) emergency regulations to ease the load on local electorial (sic) precincts and ensure a fair electorial process."- [source]

Delaware State Police stopped Alvina Vansickle from purchasing a .22-caliber pistol for self-defense because she was too old and a woman, said Superintendent Col. Thomas MacLeish.
The outrage that followed led to the revelation that Delaware State Police had been keeping lists of gun buyers for years; state law requires them to destroy these records after 60 days.
