King’s calls for resolving our differences through peaceful nonviolence are especially poignant after Jared Loughner gunned down six people and wounded several others in Tucson. Amid the clamor for new gun laws, its appropriate to remember King’s complicated history with guns.

Most people think King would be the last person to own a gun. Yet in the mid-1950s, as the civil rights movement heated up, King kept firearms for self-protection. In fact, he even applied for a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

A recipient of constant death threats, King had armed supporters take turns guarding his home and family. He had good reason to fear he was targeted for assassination.-[source]

That means to some to buy guns. And two elderly gun owners say they are not afraid to use them. They say having a gun is the only way they feel safe anymore.

A 75-year-old widow in Hoover has a handgun in her car and she keeps a double barrel shotgun by her bed. Each one of her guns is loaded.

Sixty-five year old Willie Biggs of Birmingham keeps a shotgun in his home to protect himself and his wife.

Both are prepared if needed.

The widow says, “If someone tries to bother me I don’t expect to let them do it without a fight. If they are bothering me, if I am in fear of my life then I feel like I’ve got them the reason to shot somebody.”

Willie Biggs says, “As you listen to the media and read the papers, there’s so much happening around you. You never know.”

Both of them say now more than ever before, it’s extremely important to have a gun.

They say it’s scary knowing that they may have to shoot a robber or a burglar, but they will do it.-[source]

A growing list of states joining the legal battle over federal gun control argued Monday that Congress can’t regulate guns made and sold within a state.

The argument over gun control, sparked with the “firearm freedoms act” first enacted in Montana and subsequently in other states, is leading to a constitutional showdown over the reach of Congress into state borders.

“The American people and the several states created the federal government, and they now want the federal government constrained to the proper role for which it was created,” said Gary Marbut, president of the Montana Shooting Sports Association that launched the lawsuit. “This is a forward step for freedom that has always been at the heart of who we are in America.”

Utah, Alabama, Idaho, South Carolina, South Dakota, Wyoming and West Virginia all signed on to the lawsuit. The states argue that the U.S. Constitution gives them the right to control activities inside state borders, and they want the authority to do so under the firearms freedom acts advancing around the country. – [source]

A fatal shooting at the University of Alabama in Huntsville has opened a 24-year-old can of worms in Massachusetts, forcing law enforcement there to reopen the investigation of an earlier incident involving the same perpetrator.

Amy Bishop, a 44-year-old Harvard-educated neurobiology professor at the university, pulled out a 9mm for which she had no carry permit at last Friday’s faculty meeting and opened fire, killing three of her colleagues and seriously wounding three others. When the gun jammed, the “courageous” remaining five professors managed to shove Bishop out of the room and barricade the door, possibly putting other staff or students at risk.

Bishop’s murderous rampage would most likely have been avoided had the 1986 shooting of her younger brother been investigated thoroughly. In December of that year, 18-year-old Seth Bishop died when he was shot in the chest by his sister. She then held up an automotive repair shop, claiming that she had had a fight with her husband and needed a getaway car before he came after her. A shop employee who spent a few moments on the other end of Bishop’s shotgun is now saying that the police spoke to him briefly at the time of Bishop’s arrest but never returned to question him further.

Then-district attorney William Delahunt, now a Democrat congressman, ruled the shooting an accident. Delahunt is presently traveling in the Middle East and has refused to provide a statement. Coincidentally, at the time of the shooting, Bishop’s mother was a member of the police personnel board.-[source]
